We have seen and tried many teakettles. This one hits every note, including its harmonica whistle. Yes, the whistle can become loud and shrill. But you'll never over-boil this kettle. The whistle changes sounds as the boiling increases. To hear the harmonica sound you need a huge boil. And yes, it eventually sounds like a train whistle. If you are older and your hearing is not so good, there is no fear of missing this sound! We love tea and we love this teakettle. The design is beautiful. The brushed stainless steel is perfect for the design. It heats up quickly, is a pleasure to see on the stove, and you'll never worry that it won't fill your pot with hot water.
I strongly recommend reading the instructions, which explain how, over time if you have hard water, the whistle will be affected by the hard water. It says to use filtered water or explains how you can eliminate the problem by boiling water and vinegar together from time to time. If that fails, it's a teakettle for which you can order new parts.
