Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chantal Enamel-on-Steel 1-4/5-Quart Classic Teakettle, PlatinumCustomer Review: Not worth the price Summary: 2 Stars
I selected this color because it was the only Chantal NOT made in China. The workmanship seemed well-done. The two-tone whistle was great; however, once in a while, some water managed to spew out of kettle even when filled under the spout mark. Additionally, as it reads on the label always use a mitt to handle the hot kettle. I would use the handle cover mitt that was provided with kettle and found steam to be pretty intense EVERY TIME I poured the water. Therefore, I would not recommend for individuals with delicate skin conditions.
This summer my family moved into a new apartment with ceramic top, my first time using one, and accidentally turned the wrong burner which hosted my tea-kettle. The Kettle boiled dry and the enamel fused into the ceramic cook-top. I had thoroughly read my kettle instructions immediately after I purchased it and knew that kettles left to boil dry was forbidden. That is when I called customer service and become even more disappointed. There was no alternative to repairing the missing enamel. Chantal offered to sell me another kettle for a discounted price ($72). The two-tone whistle is unique but I am not willing to make such an expense for it. The original price of my kettle was $120 at Williams-Sanoma and I believed that Chantal would offer to repair it for a price, but $72 is unacceptable. These kettles are not worth the price. The kettle's instructions pamphlet reads that these kettles are not guaranteed to whistle every time. If you want to save energy and avoid boiling your kettle dry stick to using a kitchen timer with any kettle.
Description of Chantal Enamel-on-Steel 1-4/5-Quart Classic Teakettle, PlatinumChantal 1.8 Quart Classic Enamel-on-Steel Teakettle in Platinum. True to its name, the Chantal Classic teakettle is gorgeously timeless in shape, adding elegance and excellent function to teatime. Fashioned from durable steel with gleaming enamel coating for color, the kettle holds 1-4/5 quarts in its domed body. The base features a sandwiched-aluminum construction for quick conduction, and the flat design makes thorough contact with the burner. A rubber gasket ensures a tight seal on the lid, and the boldly arced handle is handsome from all angles. The handle is not heat-resistant, but Chantal includes a fitted little handle mitt to make pouring easy. Other than its graceful profile, the Classic's most distinctive feature is its two-tone Hohner harmonic whistle. Strong rather than shrill, it sounds like a train whistle and is sure to get the attention of any distracted teadrinker. Chantal offers replacements for all moveable parts on this kettle for a lifetime of use. It comes in a range of rich colors, and washing by hand is recommended. --Emily Bedard
